About

What is GYROTONIC® methodology?

Gyrotonic (from “gyro,” meaning spiral and “tonic” meaning to tone or invigorate) methodology is a movement program designed to exercise the entire human body together with the mind. Developed by Hungarian born Juliu Horvath, a former dancer and gymnast, Gyrotonic exercises remind one of the experience found in swimming, dance, yoga, gymnastics and martial arts. Stretching, strengthening, lengthening, spiraling, energizing and invigorating are all words used to describe Gyrotonic motion patterns.

How does one practice GYROTONIC® movements?

Gyrotonic movements are practiced on a machine, a handcrafted wooden tower and bench with straps and pulleys. Exercises are performed in the air against resistance, thereby allowing the body to extend further than it could on its own with minimal compression of the joints. Carefully choreographed circular and three-dimensional movements make up a Gyrotonic program.

What is meant by Feel good from the INSIDE OUT?

Gyrotonic movement is work for the bones, joints and muscles of the human body. The movement stretches and strengthens muscles while simultaneously stimulating and stretching the connective tissue in and around the joints. The exercises, synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns, provide stimulation to the cardiovascular and nervous systems, as well as encourage development for increased strength, flexibility and coordination. Each movement originates from the spine and guides the energy out to the extremities, awakening the whole body to feel good inside and out!

Is GYROTONIC® methodology like anything else I’ve ever done?

Gyrotonic exercises have names such as frog, spiral, lobster, breast stroke, eagle, windmill and many more! As soon as you begin, your natural instinct for movement will guide you as you learn the specific concepts with hands on instruction. Gyrotonic work is fully adjustable to the needs of every body type and strength level.

Who would benefit from GYROTONIC® exercise?

Absolutely everyone. Worldwide, Gyrotonic movement is enjoyed by people of all ages, including sports enthusiasts, dancers, gymnasts and golfers. In therapeutic settings, Gyrotonic equipment has been used successfully for all types of rehabilitation and when practiced regularly, aids in the prevention of injury.

How often should GYROTONIC® exercise be practiced?

Sessions are suggested twice a week for 1 to 1 ½ hours, although each individual will have personal goals and circumstances. Initially, the first 4 sessions (introductory package) are 1 ¼ hours each to facilitate full understanding of the Gyrotonic principles. Independent sessions are available for qualified students with instructor approval.

What should I wear for a GYROTONIC® lesson?

Dress comfortably in clothing that allows you to move freely.
